The Aviva Series returns to Scotland on Saturday 28 January 2012 as the Aviva International Match rolls in to Glasgow for another year of world class athletics.jessicaennisglasgow2011

Britain's best athletes will go head-to-head with teams from around the world in a unique format that has taken place at Kelvin Hall since 2003. The Aviva International Match gives you the opportunity to watch the world's elite athletes compete on British soil for the first time in 2012, and if past events are anything to go by, get set for an exhilarating afternoon's action.

This incredible event provides entertainment for the whole family, both on and off the track. Make sure you choose your team in the opening ceremony and support them the whole way through the event. Word of warning – don’t leave your seat too soon or you will miss the trophy presentation to the winning team at the end of the match!

In the exhibition area the Aviva Dome is open to the public and is full of fun activities for both adults and children, including a host of games and activity for the whole family to enjoy.

UKA sponsor Alfa Romeo is also on site with their popular simulator – experience a ride in a real Alfa Romeo sports car – open for all adults and kids alike.

You might be hungry for the action on the track, but away from it you can settle those stomachs with a wide range of food and drinks from the exhibition area.

And of course, UKA mascot Spike will be at Kelvin Hall all day to meet fans – make sure you say hello to him.

Choose your team, sit back and enjoy the show!

Glasgow Athletics Association would like to add their congratulations to Janice Eaglesham and Ian Mirfin of Red Star AC on being presented with the 2011 BBC Scotland Sports Unsung Hero. Both Janice and Ian are fine examples of coaches/club administrators who give their time generousley in order to promote and develop our sport, not just in Glasgow, but Nationally and Internationally.

The pair continue to coach and organise the club which has helped more than 150 athletes since 1990.

Ms Eaglesham, who recently retired as a sports development officer with Glasgow City Council, said: ‘We get as much out of running the club as the athletes do by taking part. It is a pleasure – we have been very fortunate to have worked with so many exceptional people.’

Mr Mirfin added: ‘We gained far more in return than we ever invested. It is humbling working with these athletes and to watch them progress and achieve their goals.’

Athletics coach Tommy Boyle, who has worked with many Scottish athletes such as Tom McKean and Yvonne Murray, presented the BBC Scotland Sports Unsung Hero 2011 to Janice and Ian at the club.

Tommy said: ‘It is fantastic for both of them. They have inspired so many athletes to be the best they can be in sport and life.’

The pair, both from Cambuslang in Glasgow, will now represent Scotland in the Unsung Hero category at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year on December 22.

Ewan Angus, BBC Scotland Head of Sport, said: ‘Janice and Ian are worthy winners of this accolade. Their record in helping athletes at the Red Star Club reach their targets over many years is first class.’
